Theology: What we believe about God, people, and the universe
  • Who is God?

Trinity We believe that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and that these three persons are distinct from one another yet perfectly united in holy love and relationship so that God is one being. Genesis 1:1,26; John 1:1,3; Matthew 28:19; John 4:24; Romans 1:19,20; Ephesians 4:5,6 God the Father We believe that God the Father is the Creator and sovereign Ruler over all things; he is the source of everything good; he is personal; he is infinitely holy, good, wise, and powerful; he designs all reality and guides all history to glorify his Son. Luke 10:21-22; Matthew 23:9; John 3:16; 6:27; Romans 1:7; I Timothy 1:1,2; 2:5,6 I Peter 1:3; Revelation 1:6
  • How Do We Know God?

Bible We believe that the Bible is the infallible word of God; the Holy Spirit worked in and through the human authors, maintaining both the freedom of the human authors and his exact intent (2 Peter 1:21); the Scriptures are both the work of God the Holy Spirit and the work of man (e.g. Acts 4:25), so that God’s meaning is the same as the human author’s intention; the Bible is both the word of God and the word of man. We believe the Bible is without error in its affirmation of doctrine, historical events, and in its interpretation of those historical events; the Bible does not affirm any thing that is contrary to fact if it is understood in its proper literary context. We believe that Jesus Christ is the subject matter of the Old and New Testaments, and that today the Holy Spirit works through the preaching of the word by the church to save humanity through the revelation of Jesus Christ. II Timothy 3:16; I Peter 1:23; Ephesians 6:17; II Peter 1:20,21; Mark 13:31; John 8:31,32; John 20:31; Acts 20:32
  • Who is Jesus?

God the Son We believe that Jesus Christ is God; he is the Image and Word of the Father; he is the eternal Son of God who became a man through the virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit, lived a righteous life, was crucified, died, was buried, rose from the dead, and ascended to the right hand of the Father. The person and work of Jesus Christ the Son of God perfectly reveals the love of the Triune God. We believe that the entire universe and all of history serves to glorify Jesus Christ. Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38; John 1:1; 20:28; Romans 9:5; 8:46; II Corinthians 5:21; I Peter 2:21-23; John 20:30,31 Matthew 20:28 Ephesians 1:4; Acts 1:11; Romans 5:6-8; 6:9,10; Hebrews 7:25; I Timothy 3:16, Col. 1:15-20
  • Who is the Holy Spirit?

God the Spirit We believe in the personality and the deity of the Holy Spirit. He is the eternal love between the Father and Son; he works today to convict the world of sin and to bring people to faith in Jesus Christ through regeneration and new birth; he brings believers into holiness, sustaining them to the end. John 14:16,17,26; 15:26,27; John 16:9-14; Titus 3:5; Romans 8:9; I Corinthians 3:16, 6:19; 12-14 Galatians 5:22-26
  • What are Human Beings and how are They Saved?

Humanity and Salvation We believe that human beings both male and female were created sinless in the image of God and are designed to enjoy relationship with God together through trust and obedience, but through their own volition have sinned and destroyed their relationship with God and with each other, thereby distorting the image of God in them. We believe that human beings are saved through faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ, and are unable to restore themselves to relationship with God outside of faith. We believe that human beings are brought to faith and trust in Jesus Christ by the work of the Spirit alone; he causes the circumcision of the heart (Deut 30:6), the replacing the heart of stone with the heart of flesh (Ezek 11:19; 36:26) - essentially the new birth and spiritual baptism (Col 2:11-12) - which opens the eyes of spiritually dead human beings and reveals the person and work of Jesus Christ to them, bringing them certainly to faith and trust in him (John 3:3-8; 16:14; Titus 3:5; 1 John 5:1). As a result, believers are regenerated and are restored to relationship with the Father as his sons and daughters through union with Jesus Christ the divine Son of God (Eph 1:3-14; Cor. 5:17; Jn. 1:12; 2 Pet. 1:4). John 1:12-13, 3:14-21; 5:24; 8:12; 10:26; Romans 3:21-26; 5:19; 14:23; I John 1:9; II Corinthians 5:17, Rom. 8:1;Col 1:19-22; I Timothy 1:15; I Corinthians 15:13-17; I Thessalonians 2:4, 1John 5:1
  • What is the Church?

Church We believe that the church is the community of those who have confessed faith in Jesus Christ. The church exists to glorify God by proclaiming the person and work of Jesus Christ to the world through preaching the word, baptism, communion, corporate worship, and holy living in accordance with the Scripture. Ephesians 2:19-22; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 5:19-23; Acts 2:42; Hebrews 10:23-25; Matthew 16:18, Acts 8:1, 11:22, 15:13-21, 20:28; I Cor. 1: 11-17, 3:9-16, 6:19; 2 Cor. 6:16; I Timothy.3:15; Matthew 28:18-20
  • What's Gonna Happen?

End-Times We believe that Jesus Christ will return gloriously, suddenly, and visibly to judge the living and the dead. We believe that when Christ returns the dead will be raised, and those who have put their faith in Christ will dwell with him in joy forever, and those who have rejected him will endure the torment of separation from God forever. Matthew 24:44, 25:13; Mark 13:32-33; Luke 12:40; John 14:3; Acts 1:11; I Thessalonians 1:9-11, 4:13-17; Hebrews 9:28, James 5:8; I John 3:2; Revelation 20:11-15, 22:8-20
